Main content start

Learn how to access your 1098-T form and understand how your SSN/ITIN and address are reflected on the form.

How do I opt-in to receive and view the 1098-T electronically?

  1. Log into Axess (student role)
  2. My Finances > Pay & Tax Statements > 1098-T
  3. Select "grant consent" (look for the rectangle toward the bottom right of the screen)
  4. Read the agreement, select the checkbox and then submit.
  5. When available (on or about January 31 each year), select the year link to download your 1098-T.

When will I receive the 1098-T form?

If you opt to receive your 1098-T electronically before the end of the calendar year, you will receive an email in late January notifying you when the form is available in Axess.

If you do not opt to receive your 1098-T electronically, and you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident in a degree-seeking program, a paper form will be mailed to your home address on file with Stanford. Mailed paper forms will be postmarked by January 31.

I am an international student. Do I need the 1098-T?

Generally, international students are not eligible to claim education tax credits, and therefore will not need to use the 1098-T form. International students who received fellowship or scholarship funding from Stanford in 2025 will also receive Form 1042-S

For more information relevant to international students, please see

Or, if a you have become a US resident for tax purposes, and have not reported this status change to the university, please contact Payroll to update your information.

If I already graduated, how do I view my 1098-T?

Alumni have on-demand access to the 1098-T via Axess. (Alumni have base-level Axess privileges for 5 years after degree conferral.)

The breadcrumbs for accessing the 1098-T are:

  • Log into Axess
  • Then, select My Finances > Pay & Tax Statements

Why do I need to report my SSN or ITIN number?

The University must report accurate student financial data to the IRS. Both your name and Social Security (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification (ITIN) Number must be correct and match the information used by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) before Stanford begins the process of generating your 1098-T.

Can I request an address change on my 1098-T?

The 1098-T normally includes your home address, whether it is in the US or abroad.

Requests to update the student’s address are not fulfilled since the form does not need to be sent with the tax returns.
