Effective for Undergraduates Matriculating 2023-24

You can apply a maximum of 45 quarter units of advanced testing credit or coursework transfer credit toward your undergraduate degree. If you are considering applying for credit for international exams, you should be aware of the following:

  • Testing boards and Academic Subjects not listed on this chart are not eligible for AP credit. Allowable exams are determined annually by the Office of the Registrar and the academic departments.
  • Stanford may remove test credit from your record if your subsequent Stanford coursework duplicates test credit equivalent course content. Likewise, courses taken below the level of placement are considered duplicating courses.
  • You may not be awarded units for more than one exam in the same subject type (excluding language and physics subject areas). If you submit multiple qualifying exam scores for the same subject, the single exam awarding you the greatest possible number of units will be posted.
  • After you have reviewed the charts below, to request this test credit be placed on your student record please submit a help request indicating the exam you completed, and the subjects you are seeking units for.
    • You may also include an unofficial copy of your score report
    • You must include a receipt/confirmation that your scores have been sent directly to Stanford.
  • Please see "How Do I Add Credit by Exam to My Record?" for more information on how to send your scores to Stanford, and how we receive and process your exam scores.

How to Request Evaluation for an Exam or Subject Not Listed Here

Please send an email to degreeprogress@stanford.edu with the following documentation:

  • A copy of your score report (student scores or official reports are acceptable; you will need to request your official scores to be sent directly from the testing board to Stanford University before your final units will be posted)
  • A link to the official testing board site, and any additional official links to informational pages regarding scoring, subject overviews, new policies effective the year you took your exams, etc.
  • Exam syllabi, scoring guides, practice tests; the departments will need to evaluate official sources describing the academic content of the exam against Stanford's curriculum.

The department of Degree Progress will then connect you with the academic personnel who will evaluate the subject matter, so that they can ask you any follow-up questions or request additional documentation as needed. Once the subject evaluation is completed, the department will coordinate with the Office of the Registrar on how many units you will be awarded. This process may take up to 10 weeks depending on the availability of academic officials and documentation. No approval for equivalent undergraduate units, subject proficiency, course placement or any combination thereof is guaranteed.
