Last Units Out of Residence

If you are an undergraduate or coterminal student (with an open UG career), you may petition to finish your final 15 units out of residence to complete your degree requirements. 

Students looking to pursue this option must submit a Graduation Quarter (GQ) or a Permit to Attend for Services Only (PSO) form and select “Yes” they will be taking their last units out of residence. All conditions for a GQ or PSO must be met with the completion of the final units taken out of residence. Documentation of approval for transfer credit associated with the Last Units Out of Residence must be included in the submission of the form. 

Students must first submit their transfer credit request through the appropriate channels. This includes providing all necessary documentation and information required for evaluation. Students should wait until they have received the approval before submitting their GQ or PSO request. 

Students who received Registrar’s Office transfer credit approval prior to August 12, 2024, should submit this help request to ensure their approval aligns with the requirements of the special registration status before submitting the form. 


Important: We strongly advise students to submit their transfer credit requests the quarter before the one in which they plan to take the course(s). This timeline is crucial to allow sufficient time for course evaluation and review, ensuring that students' plans align with their academic goals. 

Students must show proof of their transfer credit approval by attaching it to their form. Failure to provide adequate approval of the transfer work will result in a denial of the eForm. Please continue below for examples of acceptable attachments for Last Units Out of Residence.


Attachments Accepted for Last Units Out of Residence

  • Registrar's Office approval email for transfer credit

    • The emails from the Registrar's Office typically have the following subject lines: 
      • Transfer Credit - Course-to-Course Evaluation 
      • Transfer Credit Posted for Department Requirements (Program Elective Credit) 
      • Transfer Credit Approval (General Education Requirement) 
      • Transfer Credit Approval (Non-Program Elective Credit)

  • Department or program approval email for transfer credit.

    • This can be an email from your department's Student Services Officer, Program Manager, etc.

  • Help Ticket conversation with the Registrar's Office

    • Please include a screenshot of your transfer credit help ticket conversation that includes the ticket number (Ex. SR12345678)
    • There are two help tickets that can be submitted for transfer credit requests:

      • Inquire About Transfer Credit

Transcript Submission Information:

Official transcripts from the external institution are due to us no later than Stanford grades due deadline of the GQ or PSO quarter. Please contact your instructors at the external institution to ensure that all grades will be submitted prior to this deadline. If we do not receive an official transcript showing all work completed prior to our grading deadline you will not be able to graduate in the specified quarter.
