Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Log In to Navigate Enrollment
  2. Search for Classes
    • In the top right corner, select Class Search.
    • Make sure you’ve selected the correct term from the dropdown menu in the top right.
    • Use the search bar to find classes by subject, course number, or keyword. You can also filter results using the options in the left-hand menu—like instructor, number of units, meeting days, and more.
      • Stanford Navigate Enrollment “Class Search” page with filters on the left and search results for “CS106” on the right. Highlights include filter options, search bar, term selector, and results for CS106A and CS106B.
  3. Review Class Details
    • Once you’ve found the correct class, select the View Details button to expand the class information.
    • Review meeting times, prerequisites, grading basis options, and other sections.
    • If everything looks good, select Enroll.
      • CS106A course listing in Stanford Navigate Enrollment with expanded details, including schedule, location, instructors, and course description. “Plan” and “Enroll” buttons are shown at the bottom.
  4. Respond to Prompts
    • A pop-up window will ask you to confirm details like:
      • Grading basis (e.g., Letter Grade or Credit/No Credit)
      • Number of units
      • Associated section (e.g., lab or discussion) — choose one that is open and fits your schedule. If you don't select one initially, you won’t be able to add one later without dropping and re-enrolling in the class.
        • Enrollment pop-up for CS106A in Stanford Navigate Enrollment. Fields shown to select grading basis, number of units, and discussion section. “Next” and “Back” buttons appear at the bottom.
    • Some classes may also prompt you to provide:
      • Waitlist preferences – If a class has a waitlist, it might ask if you'd like to be added to waitlist if the class already full. You can also use Drop if Enrolled to automatically drop another class if you're enrolled from the waitlist.
        • Pop-up in Navigate Enrollment asking if the user wants to join the waitlist for CS106A if the class is full. “No” is selected. “Back” and “Next” buttons are at the bottom.
      • Swap with Enrolled Class – Select a class to drop if you're adding a new one. If you don’t want to drop a class, select No, enroll me as usual. (See below for screenshot)
      • Permission Number - Required only if instructor or department approval is needed, such as when a class requires an application or caps their enrollment (aka limits their class capacity).
        • Final enrollment step for CS106A in Navigate Enrollment. The user can choose to swap with another class or enter a permission number. “Submit” and “Back” buttons appear at the bottom.
      • Career (e.g., Undergraduate or Graduate) - This option will only appear for students with multiple careers (such as coterm students)
    • Once you’ve completed all prompts, select Next.
  5. Confirm Your Selection
    • A summary of your enrollment choices will appear. Review your selections carefully.

Tip: Make sure to look out for the following icons in your confirmation message.

Three status icons: green checkmark labeled “Success!”, red X labeled “Error,” and orange triangle with an exclamation mark labeled “Warning.”

Tips

  • Review Class Requisites:
    • Before enrolling, make sure you meet the requisites for the class. The system may not let you enroll if you do not meet certain requisites. Learn more about class requisites.
  • Check for Time Conflicts:
    • Review your schedule for any time conflicts—the system does allow you to enroll in overlapping classes. However, if you're waitlisted for a class, a time conflict will prevent you from being enrolled from the waitlist. To avoid this, use the "Drop if Enrolled" feature to automatically drop a conflicting class if you’re enrolled from the waitlist.
      • Note: If you’re having trouble enrolling in a class due to time conflicts, you can request a permission number from the course instructor or department to override the conflict. Learn more here.
  • Look for Waitlist Information:
    • If a class is full, check if there’s a waitlist option available. Sometimes, spots open up as students drop courses.
  • Consider Course Load:
    • Make sure you’re comfortable with your overall course load. While it may be tempting to take more classes, it’s important to ensure you have time to balance coursework, personal time, and extracurricular activities.
